About WriteClique.net The British Council Sri Lanka welcomes you to WriteClique.net. We want to encourage creative writing by providing this space for writers to 'publish' their work online. We also want to help all the readers out there find good reading material. We especially want to encourage new work from younger writers, and the web is the ideal place for this (where you can be anonymous if you wish). We also want to provide information about what is happening in writing, publishing, drama, and other areas of interest to you. We hope this will help develop a community of interested people who can share information and keep in touch. This site also fits in with our larger objective to network Sri Lankan writers and readers with other writers in South Asia and the UK. So if you're a writer we invite you to submit your work to us, become a member and tell everybody a little more about yourself, as well as find out what other writers are up to. If you're a reader, browse around to see what's available and what's new; from writers you like, and on themes that interest you. Find out what's happening in writing groups around Sri Lanka, and South Asia. If you're a publisher, we hope you will find material here that you would like to publish, or a writer you can 'discover'. Please feel free to contact the writers directly, or contact us to discuss how we can help. How it all began... In January 2004 our Arts Manager Ranmali Mirchandani attended the 'animating literature' seminar in Delhi where she was part of the 'dawn quilt' writing project designed by the Trace Online Writing School. The project encouraged writing online and offered an opportunity, especially to new writers, to be read and appreciated by a wider readership. Meanwhile we had been hearing from authors short listed for the Gratiaen prize about the difficulties of getting published. That's where the idea for WriteClique.net originated. Ranmali and then British Council Director Tony O’Brien, invited the Wadiya Group and a few other young writers to the British Council for an informal meeting to seek views on setting up a writers' website. It was a unanimous decision to move towards setting up a site, and Delon Weerasinghe was the ideal choice for a Webmaster/editor, as he seemed a web-savvy writer. The name 'WriteClique' was an idea of Ms. Lilamani Ebell from the Wadiya Group. The rest, as they say, is history... The WriteClique.net project is a partnership between the British Council and The Dreamforge (Pvt) Ltd. We look forward to support from individual writers and other writers groups in the future. Watch out for our contribution to the upcoming Galle Literary Festival in January 08!
