Cosmic Consciousness

by Brian Walker

In an earlier essay, Reflections of the Lambeth Pilgrim, I declared that we are all ruled by the Cosmos and that I was a confirmed Cosmic. These are bold statements to make in a world held firmly hostage to the past, a presently stagnating world in which there has been little change in conventional thought and deed since Mahomet was decreed the very last prophet of all time some fifteen hundred years ago.

Holy Moses, as I believe myself to be a latter-day prophet with a simple common-sense Mission to fulfil, in an age that has scientifically come a very long way since those distant days of superstition and evolutionary unawareness, I'm certain to ruffle lots of feathered, protectionist nests on route. Mind you, that's probably only if my psychic revelations were ever to become a controversial topic of discussion before the United Nations Assembly, and the Lambeth Pilgrim can make any progress at all. Let's face the undeniable facts: presently, my only devotees of note are a bunch of cartoon characters called The Rainbow Men that are symbolic ambassadors of the unseen nature of their Universal Realm. Never mind, though, slow progress is better than making no progress at all, and far more far-sighted when stepping into a minefield of entrenched, self-serving hostile elements. Only fools rush in where angels fear to tread. And, to my mind, there have been too many martyrs in the past all dying for lost causes. As the voice of my Psychic Master advised in 1980: 'Brian, you have been given all the clues relating to the Nature of the Universe and Man's place in it - But, remember, there are to be no more martyrs and no more religions... Stay the clown, Brian - We like you that way.' And who am I to oppose the edicts of the Cosmic Trinity, headed by the Ultimate Force Itself?

Even to voice part-enlightened notions when one is attaining Cosmic Consciousness at present causes ripples of alarm to run through the ranks of the entrenched. So, what reaction do you think my own comprehensive theory related to the Universe and Man's place in It would cause, if the voice of the Lambeth Pilgrim ever became popular with the masses? It would be like a holocaust, shattering the foundations of existing thought and deed. My present life wouldn't be worth living. I'd be a target for every nut-case fanatic roaming the face of the planet.  Therefore, let me pass on naturally to another Cosmic Adventure before the Myth of the Lambeth Pilgrim and his devotees, The Rainbow Men, hits the mass-media in a big way. And, make no mistake - Your future world will be inhabited and governed by Homo Sapiens Cosmos, a super-breed, all endowed with Cosmic Consciousness and the kiss of death to all existing religious mumbo-jumbo. It doesn't need me to become a martyr to prove this statement; I'll just see you around in my next life.

In Reflections of a Lambeth Pilgrim, I gave two examples of others who had broached such radical ideas of an evolving Cosmic Consciousness and, as a result, fallen foul of the Establishment. Both were ordained personalities of the Christian faith.  Now, I will present another activist of mixed upbringing and another ethnic background, devoted to the same cause of transforming humanity:

Sri Aurobindo (1872-1950), a one-time activist for the independence of India, later redirected his mind to far more philosophical matters. He developed Integral Yoga, a synthesis of Yogic traditions adapted to suit modern times. The object of his philosophy was the spiritualization of the natural world. While other yogic disciplines seek to escape the world via nirvana, Sri Aurobindo sought to embody God in everyday life.  His philosophy grew out of his own spiritual experience. He viewed the evolution of Earth in three distinct stages: Matter, Life and Mind. He believed that he had been sent to Earth by God with the power to raise the consciousness of humankind to its next evolutionary state of Supermind.

In my opinion, however, his spiritual experience hadn't been enough for him to trace his roots back to the Creation of the Universe and comprehend that he was himself the God that had sent him to Earth, and that he was on route to becoming the Animate God, endowed with all the abilities necessary to achieve Supermind status. Nevertheless, without really realising that Mind has first to go through the process of Animate Perfection before embarking on a more Spiritual Path, Sri Aurobindo at least challenged the concept of nirvana, predominate in Eastern religious beliefs. Good for him - Because I don't think any entity, whether you call it God or the Ultimate Force, that created this Universe wants Its evolving Intelligence to revert to a state of nothingness before having experienced the fruition of Its own Seed - Namely, living in state of conscious perfection, whether it be animate or spiritual.

So, welcome to the emergent Realm of Cosmic Consciousness. But, please watch your step - There are some mighty insecure predators at large, running scared in the old Realm of Crass Ignorance.
